Stop Marketing with Your Facebook Personal Profile! 3 Reasons Why…

Nothing drives me more crazy than getting tons of friend requests from people I know are just trying to boost there facebook friends for purely business reasons. If this is what you’ve been taught, it’s not your fault, but you need to stop.

I promised myself the second I started hearing these strategies that I would never do it.

My facebook profile is MINE. Not my business’s. It’s for me to chat with my wife when I’m away, to post vacation pictures so my mom and dad can see them, and to keep up on what my friend’s are up to. Not only are you using a great social tool for something it’s not meant for, facebook personal profiles are FAR LESS effective at promoting and selling online.

If you are wondering what the alternative is to personal profiles, you will want to watch how to create a Facebook fan page.

My Facebook Personal Profile is…Personal!

You can only have 5,000 friends anyway, so are you just going to settle for 5,000 business contacts and that’s it? That doesn’t sound like a great plan, especially when fan pages are unlimited! It’s tedious to just go out and friend everyone sending them a personal message.

Not only that, your real friends are going to get annoyed pretty quick with all your marketing status updates. Leave everything to your fan page. Please. It’s way more effective and it lets you separate business and life…which is probably a goal you have in the first place.

So, this list comes down to these 3 simple reasons…

  1. Your facebook personal profile should be something you use to really connect with friends and family (that’s what it is designed to do)
  2. You can only have 5,000 contacts on profiles, so why limit yourself?
  3. Facebook Fan Pages give you so many more marketing resources (Custom tabs, Info Tabs, more Wall features, Applications) to really reach out to your follwers

What do You Think?

Are you sick of meaningless friend requests or trying to mix business and friendships in one place? Do you reserve your personal profile for “personal” stuff?

  1. Personal is PERSONAL and never the two shall mix! The fastest way to lose true friends is to stuff your business down their throats! If they want to “like” your fan page, when its pertinent to them, that’s cool, but other than that leave business OFF your personal page.

  2. brian, I couldnt agree more, thats the entire reason I sought to build a fan page for my business right from the start ,so my personal page is just that personal

  3. I actually took a social media class before I started my fan page and was told this very thing. I hide/block or delete “friends” who shove their businesses down my throat. I love my fan page because I know the people who click that like button are actually interested in that aspect of what I have to offer.

The worst ones send you messages to your inbox pushing their products/services on you. I mark them as spam. Annoying!

    • Couldn’t agree more Kellie, I definitely think Facebook is a great way to network…but the personal profile should be used to connect with people you actually know, not spam those you don’t know yet

  5. I agree though I have been guilty of accepting a couple of friend requests from friends of friends just because I could! It’s better to have a small, committed tribe that is willing to pay for your services than have tons of fans who don’t really feel connected with your business at all!

  6. Do you know a way to “tag” photos from the business Page to other peoples profile’s? As fas as I know, this can only be done if the person is a friend on the personal profile. As a photographer tagging someone’s photos to their profile is how I network my photography business.

  8. You’re right. My friend lost half of the profile members who joined from your personal account. Very correct advice. Thank you and welcome to the Polish – the most beautiful country in the universe;)

  9. Well said!! Shared that forward! I know I have accidentally done that and when i see it over and over again from “friends” and their “business” I get close to hitting delete or “hide” the friend … and you are right – they may not have realized that was what they were doing !
